This year the British Airsoft Show, which forms part of the wider British Shooting Show experience, was held over 3 days but it still felt like just a very minor ‘add-on’ to the main event. The hall, all the airsoft sections occupied was well tucked back from the major halls but did sport the events shooting ranges for more main stream air weapons and other shooting clubs such as IPAS and small bore clubs. In a way its relative distance from the entrance helps, in that airsofters get to goggle at all the real steel weapons along the way with some great displays of KAR’s, Mosins, and Lee Enfields and various shotguns and shooting experience days to name a few stalls along the way onto the airsoft halls, I enjoyed a really nice display of some real steel SiG’s. I would like to give a special mention to the Accuracy International stand that had any number of people drooling over some of their wares on display!

Now we can all attend these ‘trade’ shows for various reasons and if your after news, gossip, making contacts and getting a general feel for the UK scene they are great events for that and not to be missed, but if you’re looking for a huge variety of traders, stalls or manufacturers you’ll be sadly disappointed! Don’t get me wrong the retailers present are quality and are well known throughout the country and you’ve probably even visited their websites, so seeing the staff you talk to and being able to handle the likes of the fantastic MG34 on the RedWolf booth is always a bonus, plus seeing demos of gear you’ve maybe thought about purchasing but put-off buying, like the OhshiBoom Boys working hard and showing airsofters around their products, setting off a few Impact Grenades in their demo’s on the Pro Airsoft Supplies booth, which added to the overall bang fest coming out of the main Stirling Airsoft demo area storming the CQB village they had set up to show off the airsoft skills to those not familiar with the sport.

Airsoft Action Magazine even had special guest ‘Sniper One’, Dan Mills plus demo’s on weapons use and safe handling tips by Pro-Tact Shooting as well as presenting a recent winner from the magazine with his new ‘Andy Mcnab’ AM22 (HK416) rifle from Leeds Airsoft. Talking of prizes many booths offered raffle tickets for chances to win some very tasty prizes.

Airsofters where also treated to some technological innovations such as the Bel Tec Sentry Gun and the excellent Optic Shields they also manufacturer here in the UK. Plus many players where asking hard questions of the newly formed British Airsoft Club who also shared a stand with Red Alert Airsoft and were happy to explain the new scheme to players.

For me the area did lack a varied selection of tactical gear choice, although Badger Tac Airsoft did try to address that problem with their good range of Voodoo tactical bags, pouches and tac gear and of course Dave’s Custom Airsoft with their Regulation Tactical Reflex Pouches and Universal Tactical Clip but sadly no one was really dedicated to a huge variety of uniforms, accessories, vests, pouches and packs – something which really does need rectifying for the next show.

The show was tinged by some very sad news with the death of long time show organiser and some one who encouraged the airsoft element within the wider British Shooting Show, John Bertrand will be sorely missed by shooters from all disciplines. Our best wishes to his family.

Yosser says: The UK airsoft scene is gathering more momentum & interest from a wider group of people. We’re still however a long way off a ‘golden age’ of UK airsoft and great to see so many retailers co-operating and assisting each other at the show, so maybe there is some hope for airsoft in the UK despite some of the poor attitudes displayed by a minority on facebook recently over RoHS compliancy. It’s still a long way off the equivalent of IWA or the hallowed LV Shot Show but maybe one day it will get there.

British Airsoft Club

BAC interview from BAS 2014

A few days prior to the British Airsoft Show the blog received a press release announcing the birth of a new organisation called the British Airsoft Club.

Advertised as a viable alternative for UK airsofters to assert their bona fide airsoft credentials for the purchase of RIF’s (Replica Imitation Firearm), which as we know is a UK Legal requirement under the VCR Act. This UKARA alternative has promised to plough players registration fees back into the sport for the benefit of its members and even have a player representative committee to put forward ideas so its members can vote on what to do with surplus revenue for the benefit of its membership.

This as you will probably see offers a much more open approach then the current scheme. Players will be able to register and record their games on-line with sites verifying the games they have attended. This site even allows for players who play at multiple sites and if already UKARA registered 'port' their current 'active player' status over.

To find out more about the scheme we went along to the Red Alert Airsoft Booth to check out the British Airsoft Club and have put together the following video interview with co-founder Malcolm to find out more:

I have re-produced the BAC's official press release here:

13/02/2013: PRESS RELEASE

The British Airsoft Club (BAC) is launching today!

The BAC has been formed to provide the airsoft market with an alternative to the UKARA system to enable a safe method of selling and purchasing Realistic Imitation Firearms (RIF).

The primary responsibility of the club will be the registration of legitimate airsoft skirmishers to comply with the provisions of the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006, Statutory Instrument 2011 No 1754, Arms and Ammunition, and the defence outlined in section 21 of Home Office circular 31/2007.

The BAC has been in communication with the Home Office and has taken independent advice to confirm that the method adopted by the Club fully complies with the law.

The BAC embodies a totally electronic method of registration. Players will register themselves and provide details of three BAC registered airsoft sites that they have attended in a period of time greater than two months. Crucially, these games do not have to be played at the same site. This information will be verified with the airsoft sites and once confirmed; a player will become a member of the BAC. This will enable the player to be able to purchase a RIF with participating retailers. The BAC system enables players to be transient and not be required to repeatedly attend a single airsoft site. The BAC will verify that that the registered airsoft sites are fully insured.

The BAC is an airsoft membership club and not a retailer association. The BAC will encourage structure, connectivity, communication and best practice between airsoft players, sites and retailers. The BAC is a non-profit organisation and has been formed to support the airsoft community and forward the sport. The BAC website will evolve with a variety of different and exciting features over the next few months.

The BAC will roll out in two stages. Stage one will be the registration of airsoft sites, which is now open. Stage two will be the registration of airsoft players and retailers. The BAC is free to join for airsoft sites and airsoft retailers.

AO's video compilation @British Airsoft Show 2013 - AirsoftOdyssey © 2013

The event had everything airsoft and shooting related, all it lacked really was more tactical kit suppliers for airsofters really but I firmly hope this makes a regular appearance on the yearly UK airsoft scene.

For ACTION, ADVENTURE & Really WILD THINGS this is THE show to attend for UK airsoft.

See you in 2014 at BAS 2014!

Stirling Airsoft logo
Stirling Airsoft provided some great airsoft demo's during the British Airsoft Show this year! This gave those unfamiliar with airsoft attending the British Shooting Show a chance to find out more about airsoft and even take part in a taster session (or 2) and handle an airsoft weapon and maybe get shot! Enjoying the adrenalin rush that is AIRSOFT!

An Unusual 'walk through' the CQB village setup by Stirling Airsoft @British Airsoft Show 2013 © AirsoftOdyssey 2013

The guys at Stirling Airsoft gave players old and new a chance to 'storm' the village in a variety of scenarios throughout the weekend including from vehicles and 'Fast Rope' down a scaffold tower akin to a helicoper insertion. Players were briefed and lent the kit necessary for 'play' and lots of people came away enthused and judging by some of the 'Ohhhs & Arhhhs' from those watching and the occasional shriek as the 'bangs' went off meant they where enjoying a good show. Filming was quite exciting as well!
