BFG Holster Review

Review by Yosser
Here at the blog we love to see airsoft innovation at its best and the Kydex Custom made VTG and BFG holders definitely come under that category.
Like many of their other holsters, these are available in a good variety of colours to compliment your kit, including black, olive, tan and hydro dipped multicam but please check the HW Holsters website for the latest info on finishes available. As well as colour availability you can also customise the attachments.
The VTG and BFG holsters I have, both have the malice clip options fitted, but you can opt for either the long or short variety, belt loops, Blade Tech Molle Lok and Tek Lok designs again check the website for availability. You could even just directly attach them to drop leg fitting via the supplied screw holes. With the supplied malice clips attachment to existing molle vest is easy and gives a variety of options that I was more than happy with.
In use I have no problems with the grenades in these holsters, some people expressed concern that they could fall out too easily, but honestly myself and others that use these regularly have had no problems with this happening at all. Fitted correctly via the malice clips they functioned really well and gave excellent quick access to the BFG or VTG when called upon. We tried to make the grenades fall out by running up and down stairs, jolting them and whatever else we could think of to do, under normal use I don’t see these being dislodged easily. The Kydex has just enough spring in it and has taken loads of fitting and pulling out of the grenades than I have counted and it’s still going strong 2 months later without showing cracks or any sign of breakage. The website does warn you about leaving in extremely hot cars as this will affect the Kydex.
The guys over at HW Holsters now produce these great bits of kit to cover other grenades on the market such as the GR20, M203 shell, TMR and Tornado Impact grenade. Plus check the website for pistol and magazine holsters with loads of custom options.

Yosser says: Great kit from HW Holsters, really impressed with the fit and finish of these Kydex holsters and I’ve seen some of the pistol holsters these guys produce, truly impressed! Some Kydex produced stuff has a ‘home made roughness’ to it. Not so this gear – it looks professionally made and produced with attention to detail and a nice range of options available. Well worth checking out and adding to your load-outs.Keep upto Date with the Airsoft Odyssey Blog via Twitter:

OhShiBOOM BFG UPDATE

BFG Update
- by Yosser
The guys from Ohshiboom have updated their range of Impact BFG’s which were released into the airsoft community during 2013.
Airsoft Odyssey covered the original OhShiBoom with a review which you can catch on the blog here: http://www.airsoftodyssey.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/ohshiboom-review.html and while the main form and function of the original product is the same, we will cover some of the main differences in this article – so for a full flavour of the OhShiBoom BFG device you may wish to refer to the original article.
OhShiBOOM Shock Yellow Impact Blank Firing Grenade (click for larger images)
The newly styled SHOCK OhShiBoom’s are now available in BLUE, YELLOW, RED, TITANIUM, and of course original BLACK. So apart from the colours what else is different?
In function it’s exactly the same! Some airsofters had noted in use that the standard cotter/split pin design was bending easily. So after listening to user feedback the OhShiBoom team had a slight redesign and have produced a custom thicker pin for the device. The impact of this has meant a redesigned head for the device, with a larger diameter hole (3mm) in the ‘wobble’ head to accommodate the thicker, stronger pin. You won’t be bending this easily! So any newly purchased OhShiBooms should come with this ‘upgrade’ assuming you are buying the latest stock from your supplier of airsoft gear. They are also looking into a solution for the older designed devices which have a smaller 2mm hole in the ‘wobble head’.
I did note in use that the older design had a better tolerance for either 9mm or 10mm rounds - this one would ONLY accept the 9mm blanks though which made me less impressed with their versality - I wonder if this is a quality control issue on the sizing and my original OhShiboom is just an aberration?Otherwise everything else is exactly the same, function, look (well apart from the pin and hole in the wobble head!) – It’s the same device and the device changes don’t affect its use. Sensitivity, robustness and operation all remain unchanged.
If you have damaged your original safety pin don’t worry you can order a replacement on line.
OhShiBOOM Old & New
Yosser says: Nice to see other colours available in the range. I was disappointed that the new version wouldn't take my 10mm blanks - but I could just change the bottom sections for that issue. For regular users of BFGs the change in the pin to a more propriety solution may put some off the purchase, as spilt pin replacement wasn’t difficult to begin with and many players I know carry plenty of spares on their tac vests – colours great, split pin redesign overkill IMHO.We really need to get these brands compared SWAT Device Vs OhShiboom!

The OHSHIBOOM Impact BFG Review
- by Yosser
The BIG name in the field of airsoft & training reusable Blank Firing Grenades (BFGs) is of course Dynatec - that's the one all other BFGs have to follow, and any newcomers into the market have BIG boots to fill. The new kid on the block in this field is the OHSHIBOOM Impact BFG.
OHSHIBOOM follows a radically different design from the more usual contenders in the class, in that it has a 'wobble' top and looks reminiscent of a popular police training grenade with just the spoon missing from its design.
OhShiBOOM Impact Blank Firing Grenade (click for larger images)
The ‘wobble’ head and firing pin is fixed in position by the pin pull, when this is removed the ‘wobble’ head then pops up and is free to move as if on a gimbal and of course the internal firing pin mechanism is freed up to detonate the blank round. The grenade stands just under 12cm tall and is 13cm in diameter at its widest point and has a pleasing knurled top and bottom to its main body with a plain band which is handy to put your own coloured tape on or engrave your own name or something on to it. The bottom silver section is removable and is of course vented to allow for the escape of gases/jet from the firing blank round. The housing for the 9mm round is loose enough to accommodate 10mm rounds, which will give players a bigger bang and can often be found cheaper than the more popular 9mm blanks. When detonated both rounds were easily removed with little ballooning of the blank, so it easily fell out of the housing which aids reload times for the player. The grenade weighs in at a rather bone shattering 457g (loaded) so it’s important to remember when deploying ANY BFGs to 'bowl' underarm and never throw the device at anyone. Ensure you always aim for the room or area rather than the man.
In practical use I found the reloading of this BFG to be a little tiresome, especially as I was already used to a simple ‘load & go’ type routine with other impact BFGs. With the OhShiBOOM the routine is a little different, when first loading it’s advised to use a small coin placed into the round chamber, which keeps the firing pin retracted, then ensure the ‘wobble’ head is pressed down, place the safety pin, fixing the ‘wobble’ head in position. Then load and tighten up the blank section and you’re ready to deploy when you pull the pin on it. Once used of course the device self-resets so you won’t need the coin (handy because that can be awkward in gloves) but BEFORE you remove the spent round, fix the ‘wobble’ head in position by pushing it down and replace the pin, then remove the spent round and reload. Now with the way it’s designed, if you don’t follow this procedure, you’ll not be able to replace the safety pin once reloaded and this may account for some tales filtering through on web forums etc. of premature detonations of the device that some players have experienced in field if they have gone around and knocked a primed, ready to go OhShiBOOM in a pouch or something. Please don’t take the risk with ANY BFG device, always use and place the safety pin correctly and follow all safety precautions. In use I found the OhShiBOOM pretty reliable on hard surfaces making it ideal in CQB type environments. Detonation of the device is reliable, however some misfires occurred when thrown with a flat trajectory landing on its side, which is typical of most impact BFG’s to be fair. Similarly detonation again was a hit and miss affair on softer, long grass, muddy soil, sand woodland environments etc. given harder ground or objects the device was more reliable, but in practice I wouldn’t recommend ANY impact BFGs in these environments and would point people towards timed devices like the VTG or the original BFG instead.
OhShiBOOM Load with 9 or 10mm Blanks
I can’t in practice say I found the ‘wobble’ head to give this impact BFG any great advantage over its competitors, but I do like its innovation and unique design. This should stow in a standard ‘smoke’ pouch on your kit – these will be popular at your local urban venue. The next time you hear ‘FRAG OUT’ and look at the device landing at your feet think ‘Oh Shi……BOOM!’
Yosser says: After a period of short supply, spiraling second hand prices and then zero availability to satisfy the insatiable appetites of airsofters for BFG's, suddenly we are spoilt for choice in the market place. Inevitably comparisons will be made between this and the many other devices now available. Playing style, personal preference and practicality will lead most people’s decisions with possibly aesthetics playing a minor role in players purchase choices. The OHSHIBOOM should definitively be up there in players’ minds when considering a purchase. I guess I'll need to do a comparison test next, watch this space.Let the BFG wars commence!
