G&G booth update, all the intel from the guys - so where is all that gear they promosed at previous shows for WW2 airsofters and more intel from intrepid reporters Maree & Keith reporting EXCLUSIVELY for Airsoft Odyssey at IWA 2014....

'Another highlight from IWA 2014 was spending time with the G&G Team. Over the past two years, we have always been invited along to the G&G booth to spend time with the management and of course the "show" team, who have always impressed us by the openness of their answers to our questions, and how much access they share of their business operations with us, so we can bring you the very latest G&G intel.

At previous shows we have spent time with the director of G&G profiling his operations and we concluded that G&G are going places. This year, we spent time with Sylvia, the Head of Media, and followed up several long term projects G&G have been working on. I admire G&G’s open honest approach and as always were happy to admit where the problems were and what was still left to solve something other manufacturers could follow when promising release dates and products. The team of G&G has been very carefully constructed to ensure a tight knit, Asian style, paternalistic organisation, focused on outcomes. The majority of the staff are hand picked, speak several languages, and have intimate product knowledge. This tight knit team is motivated to give their best to their customers with is typical of many ‘Asian Tiger’ companies. There is definitely no "I" in team at G&G.

G&G have several products underway that we have reported on in the past. Sylvia, ran us through a few that we have reported on at previous shows. Firstly, there is the M1 Garand that we reported on at last year's LV Shot Show. Well, G&G were quick to point out that they were sorry that it was not on the market yet, as they felt like they had let Airsofters down, but they pointed out that while there were any minor issues they did not wish to release the product. She went onto explain that they had tried to do as much as they could for all Airsofters, by making the AEG capable of taking high caps, and then working out an expensive engineering solution to make this work whilst making the rifle as realistic as possible but the solution had, unfortunately, alluded them. She stated that they were now working on completing the 100 percent reliability of the mid caps, and when complete they will announce a release date through the Airsoft media who have followed the story. It was interesting to note how genuine she was in her statement that G&G did not wish any AEG to leave them without what they see as 100 percent reliability.

The second major item on the agenda was the MG42, I have observed a lot of misinformation building over this highly anticipated AEG so decided sort the fact from the rumour with Sylvia’s help. Firstly, it was always going to be the MG42 for G&G as they saw it as the most iconic and most wanted. This is a very smart choice for G&G, as in the early part of WW2, the MG36 was replaced by the 42 due to unreliability issues. Thus, producing the MG36 was seen as not being an accurate reflection of the period for Airsofters and re-enactors wants and needs. Plus, the MG42 in variations, is still in service in some parts of Europe, thus it can be carried by Airsofters doing a modern theme. It has also been spotted on recent battlefields. Therefore, this is a winner for G&G, especially with the realism they intend on putting in to the product. Now, to dispel the second thing I have heard; the release date! Well, there is no release date! In fact, the MG42 is a shell at the moment, designed to gauge interest and draw attention. It is at the engineering stage, and the further development could take up to 18 months. Therefore we would not expect a release date any sooner than 2015 Shot Show and Sylvia refused to even give a guess. "We made that mistake with the Garand and the boss does not want to do it again" she told us. We will report again on developments from next year's Shot Show.

G&G MG42

Now, onto the new! Whilst at G&G, which we spread over 4 days, we decided to follow up on another item that we first reported on last year; the MARS system. We also looked at the new G&G realistic M4 midcaps, which we predict will be an instant winner with Milsim fans everywhere, and finally, the G&G Vintorez

G&G M4 MARS system

Firstly then, the MARS system. As we reported last year, G&G have been working on a Modular gearbox designs, known as the G&G Armament's Modular Assault Rifle System, which is an innovative advancement for AEG models. Based off the version 2 gearbox, thereby retaining wide aftermarket compatibility, as we reported last year, the system supports quick spring changing and even simple motor swapping thanks to the wire-free detachable motor integrated pistol grip. An integrated MOSFET, mounted at the back of the gearbox, to prevent the trigger contact burns. As we also reported, the magazine cut-off feature stops the replica from firing when the magazine runs out of BB's or there is no magazine present. Finally, the front part of the gearbox shell has been extended to relieve internal wear and stress and a new cylinder head design does away with the need for a tappet plate. This is a cut down version of what was on show last year, missing the split gearbox design and the modular programmable mosfet, but this is due to G&G wanting to let airsofters start to use some of the advantages of the system whilst they solve the final glitches in the full system. The MARS rifles should be available as they work their way through the supply chain later this year (2014). Interestingly enough, it will be available in the VSS Vintorez.

G&G VSS Vintorez Broken down

So onto the VSS Vintorez. Like King Arms, G&G has been working on a VSS Vintorez for a while now! In the case of the G&G one, while it appears to be the last one released, G&G has spent their time working on developing such aspects as there being only two screws in the breakdown of the AEG, and those are to remove the gearbox. As stated, it will contain the MARS system, and when you have emptied a magazine, you will have to rack the changing handle to start the AEG again. The finish is excellent. Whilst fans of King Arms, and after our story reviewing the King Arms Vintorez, we compared the two side by side late one day at the show, and while the external finish on both is excellent, we gave the nod to the G&G one based on the innovative engineering of how the gun breaks down and the inclusion of the MARS system. Thus, this is THE one to wait for! As with the M1 Garrand G&G have not won the race to be first to the market but with the level of detail that is put in and the innovations they have incorporated to give the player more realism they always, even as the tortoise, seem to make it as the winner. All we can say it’s great to see G&G aren't willing to sacrifice their hard fought reputation of quality and innovation for being the first.

Finally, G&G have come up with a winning ticket in the magazines they have developed to work with the MARS system! The new G&G M4 magazines. In fact, I am not going to say anything more than say that they come only in 30 round, ‘real cap’ magazines so far, but they trip the MARS system, and they look like, well, look at the pictures! No need to say anything more except I want a dozen! So, in conclusion, it was again a pleasure to receive an invite to again spend some time with G&G and to spend time with different members of the team. The organisation is well led, and is turning itself into a credit to the worldwide Airsoft community in the same way that Asian "Tiger Economies" developed in the last decade of the 20th and the first decade of the 21st century. They are an organisation on the move!

Mad Badger Airsoft make it over to check out G&G's booth - where's all that gear from last years show then?

Today was a busy day at the Shot Show. By the early afternoon, we had finally fought our way back to G&G for the second year running to get the lowdown on the current and future line of G&G products.

The first thing we asked at G&G this year was, "Where was the M1 Garand?" For those who missed our report last year on the M1, it was to be released last summer as one of the biggest airsoft and re-enactor releases of 2013. But, now, in January 2014, we are again asking, "Where is the M1?" Well, today we got the answer! This year, sometime! In other words, holding your breathe could be fatal! At least they actually did have a fully working prototype and it was in line with our expectations last year in relation to the quality and finish, so you never know! An interesting point related to the M1, is that it will now not come out with a High Cap magazine! After two years, they have still not been able to perfect that one! Oh well, such is airsoft!

Next we discussed the new, up and coming, 1903. Again, this was one of the main reports we made from last year's Show. There is good news! The release date, twelve months behind schedule, should be around April or May 2014. It should reach the market at approximately the same price as the KA98, which of course, it is based on.

In other G&G news, the first version of their MARS system, the modular gearbox, that we reported on from last year's IWA Show in Germany, should also be appearing around the same time. This will be a version or mark 1 of the gearbox, which, disappointingly for some, will not be the split gearbox design. It will still have a quick change spring system, modular mosfet trigger system and the quick release motor. Therefore, it should still be an interesting release, just what will the airsoft world make of it.

The MARS system will slowly replace their Top Tech range, and be priced at approximately the same price point. This should reduce the retail price of the existing Top Tech rifle range.

Now, the news that everybody has been recently chatting about on forums and Facebook, the MG42 and Co2 powered Mosen Nagent are, wait for it…, not even off the drawing board. According to G&G staff, the answer was not in this year and maybe not the next! According to staff, the boss in Taiwan can get a bit excitable and likes to keep the airsoft world fed and hyped up with news! Could this be a repeat of what we have seen so far with the release of the M1 Garand! Year 1, release a photo, get the community hungry, year 2 a non-working prototype building the hype and anticipation, year 3, a fully working prototype and still unsure of a release date. This and other news will no doubt be updated at the IWA Show from Germany in a few months time.

Mad Badger Air visited the Las Vegas Shot Show 2013 and have some interesting comments for anyone looking at adding a M1 Garand to their airsoft collection. Read more here….

“Today we visited the ICS stand at the Shot Show for an update on their version of the M1 Garand, and to make a comparison of the fit, finish and features with G&G’s version of the same.


The ICS Garand has been in development for some time now and is due for release by mid year (hopefully). The ICS features a real wood stock, all metal, zinc alloy, receiver and internals. ICS originally prototyped the original in 8mm but have now changed to the more standard airsoft 6mm version. The magazine is detachable from the bottom of the receiver by depressing a button and holds 42 rounds. Unfortunately we found that the bolt catch had already failed on ICS display model by day 3 of the Shot Show! The fps is planned to come in at around the 350 mark, making the gun suitable for the UK market without downgrading.


ICS state their market for this AEG to be collectors and airsofter skirmishers. David Tsao of ICS stated he felt the AEG would make a very good wall hanger for any collector. After a short discussion with other staff, David felt the gun was also lipo ready.


When comparing the finish of the ICS model to the G&G model, in our opinion the collector and serious re-enactor would be far happier with the look, feel and finish of the G&G reproduction. The ICS lacked some of the refinement of the G&G in the finish of the wood stock, the seals where wood and metal meet, and we noticed that the upper handguard was noticeably smaller in size from the lower handguard wood piece. Whereas, on the G&G reproduction, these issues do not exist and we could not fault the fit & finish, and the over all feel was very similar to the real steel version which we saw at the show. The wooden stock on the ICS was varnished, whereas the G&G was not, allowing the wood to be easily treated by the serious collector. This means that the G&G finish is closer to what would have come out of the real steel factory. Finally, the grain in the wood of the G&G illustrated the quality of the finish and the thought that had gone into selecting the wood for the stock. The retail price of both AEG’s is expected to be around the £380 to £440 mark."

Continuing their own Airsoft Odyssey at the Las Vegas Shot Show 2013 Maree & Keith from Mad Badger Airsoft visit the G&G booth to bring us a great update on the latest from the Far East!

G&G M1 Update..................
First word WOW simply just WOW!

The G&G M1 Garand is a very accurate copy of its real steel counterpart. It has taken G&G a lot of time, care, attention to detail and development to ensure that the AEG matches the Real Steel (or should that be Real Wood!) one as far as any airsoft gun can. Jimmy from G&G USA stated that G&G have spent a lot of time and development money trying to ensure their line of new AEG’s are true copies of their real steel counterparts. He stated that they were trying to concentrate on unique and exciting AEG’s that offered a unique experience and give the experienced shooter a new experience, so that means not just another M4 variant! The M1 Garand Real Wood finish has been carefully chosen and finished to ensure that it matches the look, texture and feel of the real steel finish. Keith, being a real steel WWII fan and being intimately knowledgeable of the real steel M1, thought on inspection that the wood may need some work with oil to match the real steel perfectly, but he thought the majority of airsofters would be more than happy with the weapon right out of the box, and would not notice any differences. This is great news for WWII re-enactors and fans.


Having a coffee with the G&G team allowed them to open up about their plans for the AEG entering the UK market and also allowed us to learn more about G&G's meticulous machining and manufacturing process. The M1 runs with the legendary G&G M14 gearbox with working bolt catch. A G&G head office representative explained that the machining was exacting and the edges of the alloy, where it made a seal or was bolted to the wood, was almost perfect. He stated that no other manufacturer had access to this knowledge, which gave the AEG a unique finish along the edges of the alloy, making the line of the alloy nice and straight, with no chips in it, or imperfections of cheaper AEG’s. The release date in the US is still a few months away, and the IWA Show in Germany is likely to be the first opportunity to see the secret magazine system (hence the taped cover in the pictures) and also get an exact European release date. The US model is likely to come out of the box at approximately 450 fps, and the thinking was that for Europe, 350 may be the option. This decision had not been taken at this point.

The M1 is one of the most impressive releases of 2013 that we have seen at the Shot Show, and the G&G team appeared determined to ensure that the AEG would be faultless and flawless on release.

G&G's NEW GK5C based on the AK5..................
The AK5 is a very impressive copy of the new Swedish standard issue infantry weapon. It is large, solid and very realistic. It is full metal, a very solid stock that collapses and folds around to the right hand side of the weapon. The pre-release sample was olive green and the G&G team told us that the release models would be in the olive green and also available in black. Internally the AK5 has a version 2 gearbox, with G&G's M4 style hop unit, and will take all standard M4 magazines. It also sports a working bolt catch and release. The batteries fit into the handguard, which is extremely easily accessed. The AEG has a RIS rail on both sides of the handguard and under the handguard. They are full metal and covered with supplied rail covers. It should be available in the next few weeks. More to come at the IWA 2013.........
