Umarex H&K 45 Pistol

I have grown to love the ‘understatedness’ of the Umarex branding on their boxes since I reviewed the Umarex HK417 rifle, so after a split second of anticipation the box was eagerly opened. Nestled in the box a glossy manual, small bag of BB’s, hop adjustment tool, back strap and a strange key! Oh and a very nice looking Umarex HK45 of course!

Out of the box, pointing and wielding it, it’s so GOOD. It has a reassuringly weightiness to it and racking it, well its sounds great; you’d pay attention if that was ‘cocked’ behind you in the dark. Not surprisingly without the mag it’s quite lightweight. The HK 45 has a full alloy slide with a polymer lower frame (and I believe was made by KWA).


The whole pistol is reminiscent of the HK USP so if you have one of these this should be a pretty easy transition for you. The grip is nicely shaped with a textured surface so you won’t really need grip tape adding onto this pistol. Your hand will wrap nicely around the grip and for my (medium sized) hand it’s a nice comfortable grip position with no pressure where the back of the frame goes between thumb and forefinger. The trigger guard flares out nicely to also incorporate an ambidextrous magazine release (which when pressed releases the mag easily under its own weight) and the trigger response is smooth and doesn’t require a huge ‘pull’ that can upset the aim. The slide catch is also ambidextrous but strangely enough on this pistol the safety catch, which also acts as a decocker is only on the LHS! Being right handed the slide catch and safety are all easily reached with the thumb.

As Umarex hold a licence with HK they have been able to put some tasty laser etched Heckler & Koch trade marks on this pistol. On the LHS the HK logo is emblazoned in white on the upper slide as well as “45” and “.45 Auto” as well as a code number in a much smaller font. The RHS is a more tame affair with just a white laser etched “Licensed Trademark of Heckler & Koch GmbH” proclaimed in a small font again on the lower front of the slide. The ejection port area has stamped HK45 a serial number on it. The pistol sports a 20mm rail with a metal plate set in with a serial number also set in but I don’t believe these are individual to each pistol.


Now shooting this pistol – it’s really nice to shoot and so easy to ‘drop’ a magazine out and reload so quickly – but looking around for spare magazines, good luck, they do appear to be like hens teeth currently but I’m sure the situation won’t stay like that for long. Plus, the magazine easily holds 29 rounds in a double stack, so plenty for that emergency situation when your primary is out, or for range time with just the one magazine. The pistol uses the KWA NS2/System7 gas system and easily adjustable for hop-up without having to remove the top slide but you will need the adjustment tool. Expect this pistol to shoot approx 312FPS out of the box on an average temp day using Abbey Ultra but this will vary depending on temperature/pressure and gas used.

The magazine adds weight to the pistol and as mentioned earlier this weight helps drop the magazine when pressing the release lever either side of the trigger guard. The HK45 magazine has built in ‘bumper’ which extends the pistol grip of the main pistol for those with larger hands and hopefully offer some protection should you drop your magazine but I hasten to add I’ve not tried this. Also like many quality pistols I do like the fact it has metal BB feeder lips which shouldn’t break like those pesky plastic ones you find on cheaper model pistols. Want to know what the ‘strange key’ I mentioned earlier is used for? It’s an additional safety feature to lock the trigger mechanism which can be used during transportation of the pistol. The key is turned 90 Degrees clockwise via the mechanism located in the mag well and this locks off the trigger from accidental discharge, rather neat I thought but probably would be little use for most skirmishes, although maybe useful during training sessions maybe to prevent accidental discharge!


Yosser says: It’s surprising that this pistol has taken so long to come to the UK. It’s a very very nice compliment to the HK branded range by Umarex and if you’re looking for something a bit different and top quality this is for you. You won’t be disappointed although I’m surprised the decocker on the RHS was missed off by KWA/Umarex considering the other ambidextrous features of this otherwise fabulous pistol. I wonder if an aftermarket part will become available for ‘lefties’ its all marked up already just crying out for a lever! Quality costs, but don’t let the price put you off it shines in spades on this pistol. I think I’ll be needing a bigger pistol case at this rate.
