Sterling SMG
@IWA 2014
by Maree & Keith
This ones been long awaited by re-enactors and airsofters a-like. It's certainly exciting and I've been admiring them when I've seen them on stands at various airsoft shows. BUT... is it all that it should be? Our reporters Maree and Keith investigate at IWA 2014 to bring you the truth behind the hype! Read on....
The Sterling L2A3 MK4
Peeling back the pot metal!
'Well, those of us in the community who are into collecting have been waiting a very long time for the production of a Sterling sub-machine gun! Until recent years, the Sterling was a mainstay of British and some Commonwealth forces in their requirement for a reliable sub-machine gun. Therefore, any production run of such an iconic gun becomes a major must have with all collectors! That being the case, we are sad to report that the Sterling is going to cost a pretty penny, and you will need to spend more once you have possession of it to get it to perform to the standard you would expect, that is if you want to skirmish with it!
The Sterling basically has a meal body, with that classic perforated barrel casing that ensures that it cannot be mistaken for anything else! The rest of the body (as there is no upper and lower receiver in the traditional sense) is also steel. The trigger and motor are housed in the pistol grip, which is polymer. The AEG has an interesting feel, but to this shooter and airsofter, it feels too light and just does not feel like the real weapon. It looks good and exciting, but the feel of it is, well, disappointing. Saying that, that is a compliment compared to what I am about to say!
Unfortunately, there are other factors that makes you stop smiling at this particular, long awaited AEG. Firstly, the cost. The AEG will cost around £470, and unfortunately part of this cost is RoHS certification. This brings up, all be it, a briefly interesting point on RoHS certification. Many of the manufacturers have told us over the last few months about the massive certification costs involved and this will form part of a later story! As for getting back to this one though, once you get past the feel, and cost, then there is the stock, which is steel; but I would not like to put the strength of the joint to the test! In fact, the one that was provided for me to test, quickly broke the left side joint and fell out of place! Is this skirmish proof for the average airsofter? Let’s hope the issues are sorted on the full production versions.
Getting past that, we have the known issues with the cylinder. One large EU retailer is swapping these PTW style cylinders out. One Hong Kong major retailer stated to us that this would probably require swapping following your purchase of the product. It will be interesting to see how UK retailers assess the situation.
Also there’s a word of warning on the magazines. We were told by a member of staff of a major UK retailer that the magazines were going to be quite costly!
In summing up the Sterling, I have to say that if I was doing a fully glossy magazine review I would say I love the look, and would show the glossy product and get really excited about it. In reality though, when you peel back the gloss and examine the reality of it, it is expensive and at present there were only prototypes outside Hong Kong. A member of staff at Redwolf stated that RW only had prototypes and that they were waiting on RoHS from the country of origin (good on RedWolf for the RoHS efforts).
Finally, I have to say that, in the words of a member of staff from one of Europe's largest retailers, the stock is not strong enough, it is expensive, potentially unreliable, and that is the start of the costs. He went on to say that he loved the idea of the Sterling but never buys the first production run, and the Sterling is a good example of why he follows this personal policy. In my eyes though, if I was a re-enactor, I would not care! As an airsofter, I would wait and buy it once those who like the new shiny stuff have worked out the teething problems and the costs decrease! This is to take nothing from Action though, they deserve all the praise for taking on an almost impossible task I order to please those who have particular Airsoft tastes!
Lets hope these problems with the AEG are just production teething problems and don't materalise in the full production version. The airsoft world holds its breath....

G&G Update
From IWA 2014
by Maree & Keith
G&G booth update, all the intel from the guys - so where is all that gear they promosed at previous shows for WW2 airsofters and more intel from intrepid reporters Maree & Keith reporting EXCLUSIVELY for Airsoft Odyssey at IWA 2014....
'Another highlight from IWA 2014 was spending time with the G&G Team. Over the past two years, we have always been invited along to the G&G booth to spend time with the management and of course the "show" team, who have always impressed us by the openness of their answers to our questions, and how much access they share of their business operations with us, so we can bring you the very latest G&G intel.
At previous shows we have spent time with the director of G&G profiling his operations and we concluded that G&G are going places. This year, we spent time with Sylvia, the Head of Media, and followed up several long term projects G&G have been working on. I admire G&G’s open honest approach and as always were happy to admit where the problems were and what was still left to solve something other manufacturers could follow when promising release dates and products. The team of G&G has been very carefully constructed to ensure a tight knit, Asian style, paternalistic organisation, focused on outcomes. The majority of the staff are hand picked, speak several languages, and have intimate product knowledge. This tight knit team is motivated to give their best to their customers with is typical of many ‘Asian Tiger’ companies. There is definitely no "I" in team at G&G.
G&G have several products underway that we have reported on in the past. Sylvia, ran us through a few that we have reported on at previous shows. Firstly, there is the M1 Garand that we reported on at last year's LV Shot Show. Well, G&G were quick to point out that they were sorry that it was not on the market yet, as they felt like they had let Airsofters down, but they pointed out that while there were any minor issues they did not wish to release the product. She went onto explain that they had tried to do as much as they could for all Airsofters, by making the AEG capable of taking high caps, and then working out an expensive engineering solution to make this work whilst making the rifle as realistic as possible but the solution had, unfortunately, alluded them. She stated that they were now working on completing the 100 percent reliability of the mid caps, and when complete they will announce a release date through the Airsoft media who have followed the story. It was interesting to note how genuine she was in her statement that G&G did not wish any AEG to leave them without what they see as 100 percent reliability.
The second major item on the agenda was the MG42, I have observed a lot of misinformation building over this highly anticipated AEG so decided sort the fact from the rumour with Sylvia’s help. Firstly, it was always going to be the MG42 for G&G as they saw it as the most iconic and most wanted. This is a very smart choice for G&G, as in the early part of WW2, the MG36 was replaced by the 42 due to unreliability issues. Thus, producing the MG36 was seen as not being an accurate reflection of the period for Airsofters and re-enactors wants and needs. Plus, the MG42 in variations, is still in service in some parts of Europe, thus it can be carried by Airsofters doing a modern theme. It has also been spotted on recent battlefields. Therefore, this is a winner for G&G, especially with the realism they intend on putting in to the product. Now, to dispel the second thing I have heard; the release date! Well, there is no release date! In fact, the MG42 is a shell at the moment, designed to gauge interest and draw attention. It is at the engineering stage, and the further development could take up to 18 months. Therefore we would not expect a release date any sooner than 2015 Shot Show and Sylvia refused to even give a guess. "We made that mistake with the Garand and the boss does not want to do it again" she told us. We will report again on developments from next year's Shot Show.
Now, onto the new! Whilst at G&G, which we spread over 4 days, we decided to follow up on another item that we first reported on last year; the MARS system. We also looked at the new G&G realistic M4 midcaps, which we predict will be an instant winner with Milsim fans everywhere, and finally, the G&G Vintorez
Firstly then, the MARS system. As we reported last year, G&G have been working on a Modular gearbox designs, known as the G&G Armament's Modular Assault Rifle System, which is an innovative advancement for AEG models. Based off the version 2 gearbox, thereby retaining wide aftermarket compatibility, as we reported last year, the system supports quick spring changing and even simple motor swapping thanks to the wire-free detachable motor integrated pistol grip. An integrated MOSFET, mounted at the back of the gearbox, to prevent the trigger contact burns. As we also reported, the magazine cut-off feature stops the replica from firing when the magazine runs out of BB's or there is no magazine present. Finally, the front part of the gearbox shell has been extended to relieve internal wear and stress and a new cylinder head design does away with the need for a tappet plate. This is a cut down version of what was on show last year, missing the split gearbox design and the modular programmable mosfet, but this is due to G&G wanting to let airsofters start to use some of the advantages of the system whilst they solve the final glitches in the full system. The MARS rifles should be available as they work their way through the supply chain later this year (2014). Interestingly enough, it will be available in the VSS Vintorez.
So onto the VSS Vintorez. Like King Arms, G&G has been working on a VSS Vintorez for a while now! In the case of the G&G one, while it appears to be the last one released, G&G has spent their time working on developing such aspects as there being only two screws in the breakdown of the AEG, and those are to remove the gearbox. As stated, it will contain the MARS system, and when you have emptied a magazine, you will have to rack the changing handle to start the AEG again. The finish is excellent. Whilst fans of King Arms, and after our story reviewing the King Arms Vintorez, we compared the two side by side late one day at the show, and while the external finish on both is excellent, we gave the nod to the G&G one based on the innovative engineering of how the gun breaks down and the inclusion of the MARS system. Thus, this is THE one to wait for! As with the M1 Garrand G&G have not won the race to be first to the market but with the level of detail that is put in and the innovations they have incorporated to give the player more realism they always, even as the tortoise, seem to make it as the winner. All we can say it’s great to see G&G aren't willing to sacrifice their hard fought reputation of quality and innovation for being the first.
Finally, G&G have come up with a winning ticket in the magazines they have developed to work with the MARS system! The new G&G M4 magazines. In fact, I am not going to say anything more than say that they come only in 30 round, ‘real cap’ magazines so far, but they trip the MARS system, and they look like, well, look at the pictures! No need to say anything more except I want a dozen! So, in conclusion, it was again a pleasure to receive an invite to again spend some time with G&G and to spend time with different members of the team. The organisation is well led, and is turning itself into a credit to the worldwide Airsoft community in the same way that Asian "Tiger Economies" developed in the last decade of the 20th and the first decade of the 21st century. They are an organisation on the move!

IWA 2014 Booth UPDATE
by Maree & Keith
KingArms have long produced quality airsoft kit - having owned a couple of items of their gear it's always interesting to see what's coming along from these guys. So we sent along our troops on the ground to find out more intel from the KingArms Booth at IWA 2014....
'It was great to see the staff of King Arms at the IWA Show again this year. Each year we have attended to date they have always had something up their sleeve that has surprised and excited us. This year's stand was no exception. We arrived early on the first day to see some brand new AEG's being assembled on the stand floor space, which allowed us to both speculate and observe some of those goodies. We then re-attended later in the show in order to go through the entire range and developments in the way King Arms wished to present them.
It is always interesting to visit King Arms as they are always some of the most enthusiastic people at the show. The staff are always friendly and keen to illustrate the efforts King Arms are going to in Hong Kong to increase the satisfaction Airsofters are obtaining from their experience and investment in products. The majority of King Arms staff are very keen Airsofters themselves and thus apply the knowledge gained into the products that they develop. The same design team has been working in the Hong Kong design office for a number of years now, and provide consistency in development.
In recent years, King Arms products have been recognised by the industry through the contracts they have signed in Europe and with the market penetration they have made in the U.S. market.
There is a lot coming out from King Arms in the next twelve months, therefore I am going to have to divide this article into AEG's and Gas (yes, lots of gas!)
Firstly, AEG's and the King Arms Vintorez! This has been on pre-order in the Airsoft community for some time now as we’ve all been waiting with bated breath. Although there are hints of it being in stock in Hong Kong, we think that in most places there will still a bit of a wait. Now, to the AEG itself! This rifle is full metal constructed with a reasonably realistic metal receiver, with side rail system and quite a good looking real wood stock. The integrated silencer style outer barrel is one piece by design and CNC machined out of Aluminium. King Arms told us that the rear sling swivel and receiver top cover are made of steel. Those fire mode selector, safety lever and front & dummy rear disassembly button all work and are quite realistic in appearance and feel. The gearbox has 7mm bearings and is V3. The AEG seems solid enough, and watching it being put together for the stand it certainly looked very solid internally. The weight of the gun appears typical for King Arms; that is a few pounds lighter than the actual firearm. Saying that, King Arms AEG's are usually some of the most solid and heaviest, most realistic on the market. All in all an interesting package and there will be a lot more to come when we test and compare it to the G&G version in the coming months.
King Arms has a few other developments coming up in the AEG arena, with new AK's and at least a few M4's in development. More on that in coming months though. So, in summary, the new Vintorez is the headline grabber for KA for this year, and King Arms expect all shops stocking the AEG to start putting it up for pre-order in the next few weeks. So, why haven't I mentioned the King Arms VAL? Well that is following the Vintorez in the production line and is, well, lets say, the Vintorez with a different finish!
Now, for the part of the article many will be waiting for, gas! So, here we go. Firstly, what is coming out this year. Well, towards the last 8 weeks of the year, King Arms have 1903 Springfield Rifle to join the K98 gas and Mosin-Nagant gas rifles they are launching. So, probably expect to see it around February onwards next year (2015) for those who wish to set a personal budget to make a purchase a reality!
For those of us who are into our mid 20th century firearms, there is of course the one I have failed to mention so far in this article; the 1928 gas Thompson! Finally, the prototype that we reported on from the 2013 Shot Show is now moving into production and, well yes, my collection! The Thompson will be semi and full auto and will reach the market at approximately the same time as the other new gas gun releases. It will be green gas and Co2 suitable. As for the weight of gun, yes, it is finally, not far off the real one. It actually feels only slightly less solid that the real one, and the cocking mechanism makes that same click that makes you giggle just before pulling the trigger lol. After a long discussion with Keith, the power or fps of the gun is going to be market specific for the UK. The wood quality on the pre-production was excellent and, with a lot more coming, all I wish to say at this point is that I have invested in one of the first!
Back to one of the head turners for this year's line up; the 1903! Firstly, Co2 and green gas (oh, God!), which is joining the family consisting of the parents, Mosin-Nagant and K98! It looks great and I have to say after firing the real thing a few times over the years, I have to say that the real wood stock felt better than most of the "real steel" ones I have either picked up or fired. Secondly, I did like the bolt. Sure, it is not the true real feel of the actual rifle, but it is as good as it gets for an Airsoft version. The weight of the gas gun replica is, of course, lighter than the real one, but is very solid and the centre of mass appeared correct for the weapon and period. FPS will probably come in at over 400.
The King Arms M1 Carbine and M1 Para are also on the way and are due on the production line in about 3 to 4 months. In short, they will be single shot, approximately 380 fps, green gas and Co2, and at first we thought they were de-activated real steel! Having fired the real weapons, I lifted up the gas guns one at a time and cocked them and gave them a once over. All I can say is that the wood components were finished better than any real firearm I have ever owned, the metal work was finished well, the weight was not too far off, and they were two gas guns that will be added to our collection very quickly.
Now, for the issue of RoHS compliance. After sitting down with King Arms and discussing market penetration issues, such as their growing success in the US market, the issue of RoHS compliance came up. In our coming article on the subject, we are going to rate King Arms as 7/10. That means King Arms is well aware of the issue, and is taking steps to ensure new product is tested and is RoHS compliant, through the sourcing of material and completion of tests on new models. This is where ICS is, Cybergun, SRC and may others. This is a good sign that the original UK market assessment of the shrinking of the numbers of manufacturers available domestically has already been exceeded. Well done again King Arms'.
King Arms are doing GBB in a BIG way – and are adding a great deal of quality and know how into the process and products – exciting times ahead for KA owners.

ARMEX @ IWA 2014

ARMEX
IWA 2014 UPDATE
by Maree & Keith
ARMEX have released some great quality AEG's into the UK market place in recent times - but nothing in great numbers and supply can sometimes seem a little slow. So we despatched Maree & Keith to find out what is happening over at ARMEX more usually based in Birmingham but displaying at IWA 2014.
'One of the pleasures and highlights of this year's IWA Show was a chance to sit down with Alan Phelps, the long time director of Armex UK. Alan decided to enter into the Airsoft Dragon's Den some three years ago. Already a well-established UK firearms dealer, well known throughout the trade, he decided to boost UK Airsoft by putting in over a million pounds to bring what his team would assess as the best of the Umarex product line-up to UK Airsoft, with the after sales support to ensure good value for money.
Alan is very personable who talks from hip, honestly and openly. It is always a pleasure to spend some time with him, sharing in his enthusiasm for both the real steel community and the hobby he still feels he is only just scratching the surface with; Airsoft.
Alan is first to admit that Airsoft for Armex has been a very bumpy road. Umarex, like other major brands or market re-branders, has supply issues due to the batch production methods used for Airsoft production. This has given him issues related to consistency of supply, regardless of how much money he has thrown at the situation. He has also had issues relating to getting Umarex to understand the particular requirements and different nature of the UK Airsoft market. After spending a lot of time on the phone to other members of the industry in Europe, this is a point we discussed for quite some time and could not agree more on!
The issue of the UK market being out of kilter with the rest of Europe cannot be underestimated. The UK is an English speaking country, whilst the rest of Europe speaks various languages, with French and German widely spoken and both cultures a major influence throughout the EU. In the UK, due to language and cultural differences, Airsofters will firstly look at the US scene and Airsoft market and goods, usually way before examining the European scene to any great extent. Therefore, to be ahead of the game, those in the industry have to estimate what the latest US/UK trend is, and ramp up supply to meet the demand. The rest of the EU is not even a consideration. This can be hard for other European countries to understand, as they are used to dealing with European trends, desires and wishes; which are based on many factors outside of US influence. The perfect example of which we, and the entire industry have seen, is with the G36 AEG assault rifle. This rifle is one of the best sellers from Umarex, as several German influenced or bordering states use the weapon as part of their military, or have used the weapon in the past. Therefore, the weapon is a great European seller, for reasons in addition to the fact that it is one of the world's best assault rifles. Germans, and other Europeans, see TV shows and movies or even documentaries illustrating the rifle and how it is used, and who by, and in what situations, which never make it to the English speaking world in any great way. This leads to the situation where Armex has been able to obtain a vast quantity of every version of the G36 but only a handful of any M4 variant. In the UK, on the other hand, the M4 variant is one of the best sellers by far, and probably the largest seller. This mismatch in the marketplace has been one of the major issues that Alan has had to deal with.
For those who have not been to Armex in Birmingham, Alan and his team constructed one of the best Airsoft ranges in the UK and a large area of warehouse for the sole purpose of either storing, distributing or dealing with the support services related to Airsoft. The cost of this floor space runs into the hundreds of thousands of pounds. To put it in terms we all understand, Alan and his team would have to sell over 3000 units, or AEG's of a £300 retail value just to breakeven, and with the wages of his Airsoft team and administration and regulation, this would be upwards of 10000 units. This has been a bumpy road due to supply, the matching of supply to customer expectations, and other reasons I am about to discuss.
Other challenges faced by Alan have been also meant that the road to success as a major Airsoft distributor has been hard and rocky. For example, staffing in any situation is difficult at the best of times. Alan set out to appoint an Airsoft team, that fully understood Airsoft, from a department manager down to warehouse staff. Airsoft being a difficult and peculiar hobby for an outsider to understand, the higher in the department the position was, and thus the more education and experience was required, the harder the position was to fill with someone with industry expertise and knowledge. Thus, Alan moved people across to fill such positions who were experts in their field in the real steel world, and filled the day to day practical positions with members of the Airsoft community.
Getting this mix right has been a trial and error process and has taken some three years. Alan now feels that his current team is ready for the challenges of being a major European Airsoft distributor. We would certainly have to agree that his new team is quite formidable and is placing considerable efforts to match supply to the particular requirements of the British marketplace. To ensure that this occurs, Alan is now directly overseeing or checking each purchase order to ensure that his many years of marketplace experience is the final check on trying to ensure the best match of supply to customer expectations and wider market requirements. To further ensure this occurs, Alan has outstanding and open orders that run into the hundreds of thousands of pounds. He also personally travels to Umarex Head Office to reinforce the particular needs of his market and to constantly request the right product for the UK Airsofter.
When you sit with Alan and he describes his undertaking, you realise the complexity he faces and also the immense assets he is applying to the UK Airsoft marketplace. Alan told me that he expects the process to take another three years until supply properly meets demand, and until he has forced by hook or by crook Umarex into providing the products to the UK Airsoft marketplace that UK consumers want in large numbers. Whilst this process evolves and develops, he has allocated a vast level of financial resources to ensure it.
I left the interview with Alan, agreeing to meet again to assess progress, and with a greater understanding of the respect Alan has for Airsofting. Basically, Alan has put up his personal wealth and business assets to prove it. With all the recent negative aspect to Airsoft dominating the social forums recently, Alan and his team is a good example of the positive aspect to both the industry and Airsoft community. I will happily watch developments and report on them as they progress.
Just as an aside, it is great to see that Alan is waiting on some RoHS compliance results before launching further product onto the UK market. This has delayed the entry of some new products and has caused considerable costs, but once it is completed and shipments are delivered, we should finally see products such as the new Beretta ARX we reported on for the last two years, hit the market. In addition Armex has new products on the way, such as the new IWI pistols! More to come on this one!'
