WE Makarov Test & Review

WE Makarov
Test & Review
- Reviewed by Rhino
The Makarov is one of the latest pistols to come out of WE that I have been asked to test and review. WE have really upped the ante over the last couple of years with manufacture and quality control of their pistols, rifles and ancillaries. As most of their pistols are compatible with Tokyo Marui they have inevitably been benchmarked against the TM products which is never easy. Anyway on to my test results and review.
On opening the box you get the usual egg box type packaging which keeps everything in place and protected. In the box there is the pistol itself, magazine, manual and a barrel extension and silencer ( more on these items later). On close inspection of the pistol the finish is very neat and tidy with a matt black paint job and some basic trades and a couple of serial numbers. It’s not until you hold it you realise what a neat little unit this is. People with larger hands may struggle with this as the pistol grip is very short. The magazine is again very neat and tidy and possibly the smallest pistol mag I’ve ever seen.
Now stripping this pistol is quite different to the usual Glock or 1911 strip down and it’s a little bit tricky. Pull down the trigger guard then click the hammer back and push the slide right to the back and lift off taking care you don’t snag the slide on the fire nozzle. This then gives you access to a very basic set up with the barrel and hop unit still attached the lower. The hop adjustment is again totally different to any I’ve seen on a WE pistol. No wheel, just a little slider at the back of the hop unit which is very easy to adjust. Reassembly was just as tricky as the strip down so be careful.
So I filled the magazine with WE green gas and filled the magazine with the 16 bbs it takes, the bbs were the Nuprol ones. On firing the first thing I noticed was how snappy and crisp the blow back was as the slide had a very short stroke, it was also quiet. On the chrono test I got the usual 270-280fps with the mag at room temperature which is what we come to expect from WE pistols. Now this is where things got really interesting. As I mentioned earlier this Makarov comes with a barrel extension and silencer which both just screw onto the inner and outer barrels so no need to strip the unit. So I refilled the mag with gas and bbs and put it through the chrono, the results were astonishing. The fps had increased to 365-380 and I checked this at least three times and it was whisper quiet. So if you’re planning to skirmish this pistol I recommend using a low power gas like 144a. I got two bb reloads to one gas fill as the mags are very small in keeping with the design of the pistol.
This little pistol really puts a smile on your face when you fire it as it is very snappy and sounds great. It also looks very good especially with the suppressor fitted and the compact size makes it ideal for concealing at MILSIM events etc. The only down sides to this pistol that I can see are it’s compact size will put off people with larger hands and the strip down is a little tricky. But it’s certainly on my shopping list, Enjoy!
The test pistol was kindly supplied by Milspec Solutions and is available now on their website.

Introducing Smart Gas

SMART GAS
Airsoft Green Gas
- Reviewed by Yosser
This gas comes in a variety of handy sizes offering a great deal of options for kit bags or in game quick carry packs for your airsoft needs. It is available in a small compact and very useful as an in game carry 100ml size which easily fits in a pouch. But if you’re after a larger capacity also comes in 400 and 1000ml sizes. Although you might have some difficulty carrying the larger capacity around in a pouch, unless it’s a hydration sized pouch or backpack. Definitely one for leaving in the safe zone I think.
The gas is a green gas with extra added silicone. The advantage this offers over a standard gas is the extra lubrication which gas blow backs require for the continued smooth fault free operation, The silicone also helps keeps those gas seals in the magazines and parts in the pistol operating in tip top condition as most will dry out and fail without it. In general use, you should never leave a magazine totally empty due to the possibility of the seals drying out as this will lead to leaky magazines.
Now this gas is advertised as offering up to a 20% more power at lower temperatures – this was not something I could test given the time of year but what I did notice was a more consistent FPS from the pistol I used to conduct the testing. Using a ‘standard’ gas for the first shot I achieved a reading of 290 fps with most shots falling between 270 and 280 with a significant drop off in power as the magazine was expended with a few shots falling below 260 then rising back to 274 fps. Using the Smart Gas, fps was a more consistent 277 pretty much throughout the whole magazine being expended, but as you would expect the final shots as it ran out also dropped off significantly. Nothing unusual in that, but I was impressed by a good steady power output on average using this gas.
Yosser says: Compared with other more colourful gases available these are in danger of being overlooked as they kind of look like furniture polish cans from the 1970’s, BUT don’t let that fool you, as you’d be overlooking a fully functional gas for your GBB pistol or rifle that might just cut down a little on the maintenance of the weapon and help save those seals. As for the price – it’s one I’ll be using as it stacks up against other gases and cheaper too!Follow new posts on AIRSOFT ODYSSEY via TWITTER:

Nuprol Gas Review

WE Europe
NUPROL 2.0 & 3.0 Gas
- Reviewed by Yosser
With so much hype and publicity surrounding the new gases from WE Europe I thought it was time we take a look at the gases available and see what they are all about, so we went about a brief test of the Nuprol 2.0 (Green can) and the Nuprol 3.0 (Red can).
For the test we took a standard WE Pistol – a WE XDM and loaded it up with .20g BB’s for all the tests – firing each gas in turn through a chrono to measure FPS, refilling with the next gas and then allowing the magazine and pistol to reach ambient temperature before continuing with the test firing to try and give an even playing field in terms of operating temperatures to each gas in turn.
We kicked off the testing with the ‘standard’ gas, which I’m sure if you check the labelling you can probably tell what ‘standard’ we used in the test. It was a pretty standard (no pun intended) performance, as I would have expected from the product.
So moving onto the Nuprol 2.0 Green Canister. Using this did increase the velocity by approximately 10 FPS or so. In percentage terms approximately a 2 to 3% performance increase over the bench mark ‘standard’ we used. It did take a number of retries to get a consistent result from the 2.0 gas but I’d put this down to the magazines becoming extremely cold as well as the pistol frame. The condensation on the magazine and slide were noticeable as well as the extremely cold temperature of them.
Nuprol 2.0 & 3.0 Gas review vid - AirsoftOdyssey © 2014
The Nuprol 3.0 Red Canister it should be noted does carry a warning that it should NOT be used in temperatures above 10 degrees – but hey nothing ventured, and we have to see what happens? Don’t we? The gas resulted in an extremely cold pistol and magazines again, which led to failures but we got a run of a few rounds before the inevitable venting which you see at the very end of the taped run. Sadly, FPS wise it was way down and underperformed. But I must add that this gas is designed to be used on cold days so the ambient temperature of 14 degrees inside probably didn’t do it any favours to be totally fair.
In conclusion – well it’s safe to say I’d be wary of using either the Nuprol 2.0 or 3.0 gases in any pistol with a plastic slide, as I think the extreme cold generated won’t do the pistol or slide any good with prolonged use. The Nuprol 2.0 gas I’d certainly give a go to in normal conditions but I’ll save the 3.0 for winter use (or on very cold days) only. Otherwise it will be business as usual for my standard gas based purely on the price probably. I have a feeling this might need revisiting in the deepest coldest UK winters day, assuming global warming doesn’t take effect for us!

Apache Mp5 @ Milspec
WE Apache MP5 A2@ Milspec Solutions
MilspecSolutions.co.uk have some tasty Gas Blow Back weapons - new in the UK - we had a special preview of the WE MP5 Apache A2, machine pistol as made famous by the spectacular raid made by the SAS during the Iranain Embassy Seige at a recent S.W.A.T. Urban Airsoft event at the FORTRESS. This is of course based off the real steel HK MP5A4 model and the WE model even features a stamped and welded receiver - no cheap 'pot' metal in this replica.
This was probably the first time this WE MP5 had been seen in the UK - and what can I say all of us that managed to give the trigger a tickle were mightily impressed! The finish of the overall product is nothing short of superb even down to the easy attach flash hider - personally I prefer it with out.
Flicking the weapon through its firing modes from safe, to semi, and a great 3 round burst on a Gas Blow Back - excellent bit of work WE - this really made us smile. A nice kick from the weapon as it cycles through with a good rate of fire on full auto. I have heard some criticism that it's not as fast as a Maruzen version many years old and not seen for a long time - this one I feel updates the genre and supersedes it in many respects. I could easily justify this in my collection - just need the cash now!
WE MP5 Apache A2
The only thing people may not like is the 45 round open fronted gas magazine it comes with as standard - this gives airsofters the ability to 'see' the amount of BB's left to go in the mag - this however is minor as fully closed mags are available for it separately in 30 round and the smaller format 15 round 'shorty' mag.
